About WeedKillerLawn
We test weed killers on real lawns so you do not have to guess. Here is who we are, how we work, and why you can trust what we publish.
Our Mission
WeedKillerLawn.com exists to answer one question clearly: what actually works on the weeds in your lawn without damaging your grass or wasting your money?
We started this site after noticing that most online weed killer content was either written by people who had never applied a product to a real lawn, or was so sponsored that the "reviews" were indistinguishable from manufacturer marketing. Neither is useful when you are standing in a hardware store aisle trying to decide between three similar-looking bottles.
Our goal is to give homeowners across the USA and Canada straightforward, tested guidance on weed control. Every recommendation on this site is backed by a real application on a real lawn, with documented results. If a product disappointed us, we say so.
About the Author
Lawn care specialist and independent product reviewer with over six years of hands-on herbicide testing across residential lawns in Ontario, the Canadian prairies, and multiple US states.
Ashley's interest in lawn care started the hard way: her first home came with a front lawn that was more dandelion than grass. After losing one full growing season to products that either failed outright or scorched the lawn, she started keeping detailed notes on everything she applied, how she mixed it, what the weather was doing, and what actually happened over the following two weeks.
Those notes became a testing system. Over time, the testing became a site. Since launching WeedKillerLawn, Ashley has purchased and field-tested over 40 weed control products across a variety of lawn types, climates, and weed species. She has tested on cool-season Kentucky Bluegrass and Fescue lawns in Ontario and Alberta, and on warm-season Bermuda and St. Augustine lawns across the Southern US. She references university extension herbicide programs, PMRA registration data for Canadian products, and EPA label requirements when writing application and safety guidance.
When a product is reviewed by a contributing editor rather than Ashley directly, that is noted clearly at the top of the article along with the contributor's testing background.
How We Test Products
Every product review on this site follows the same process. We do not accept free samples in exchange for coverage, and manufacturers cannot pay to influence ratings or placement.
We buy the product at full retail price. Products are purchased independently from Canadian Tire, Home Depot, Amazon, or specialty lawn suppliers. This means we see the same shelf price and availability that you do.
We establish test plots on real residential lawns. Test areas are typically 500 to 1,000 sq ft sections with a natural mix of weeds already present. We document every weed species visible before application with photos.
We apply at the exact label rate using calibrated equipment. We use a pump sprayer with a measured output to apply concentrate products at the manufacturer-specified rate. We do not modify concentrations up or down to make results look better or worse.
We track and photograph results at key intervals. Observations are made at days 3 to 4, days 7 to 10, and days 14 to 21 post-application. Kill rates are calculated based on the proportion of treated plants showing full dieback versus partial kill or no visible effect.
We record all conditions that could affect results. Temperature, wind speed, soil moisture, time of day, grass type, and whether dew was present are all noted. A product that works well in ideal conditions but fails in normal backyard conditions is not a useful recommendation.
We re-test when formulations or labels change. If a manufacturer updates an active ingredient concentration or changes the label instructions, we re-run the test. Reader reports of unexpected results also prompt us to revisit our findings.
When a review states "84% kill rate," that means 84% of the treated target weed plants in our test plot showed complete dieback by day 14. It does not mean the product killed 84% of all weeds in the lawn. We test specific weed species separately and report them individually in the results table.
Editorial Standards
WeedKillerLawn.com earns revenue through affiliate links. When you click a link to a product and make a purchase, we may earn a small commission at no additional cost to you. This does not change which products we recommend or how we rate them. Products are ranked based on test performance, not commission rate or advertiser relationship.
We do not accept sponsored articles, paid placements, or payments from manufacturers in exchange for positive coverage. If a product performed poorly in our testing, that is what the review will say.
Affiliate relationships are disclosed at the bottom of every article and review page. If a product link on this site is an affiliate link, you will see a disclosure note nearby.
If you spot a factual error in any article, use the Contact page to let us know. We correct mistakes promptly and note the correction at the bottom of the affected article with the date it was made.
Our Sources
Application rate guidance, safety recommendations, and ingredient information are based on the official product label, which is a legally binding regulatory document. We also consult the following sources when writing guides and reviews:
- University Cooperative Extension herbicide programs (Purdue, Penn State, University of Guelph, University of Saskatchewan, and others)
- PMRA (Pest Management Regulatory Agency) product registration database for all Canadian herbicide recommendations
- EPA pesticide registration and label data for US product recommendations
- Published peer-reviewed agronomic research on herbicide efficacy and turf safety
- Canadian Tire, Home Depot, and manufacturer product technical data sheets
Our guides are written for typical residential lawn care situations. If you are managing a large property, a sports field, or a situation involving sensitive ecosystems near water, consult a licensed pesticide applicator in your province or state.
